Is the TOEFL or the IELTS required for International Students?
Welcome to GMATWiz Wizako's GMAT podcast. I'm Lexa Wiz.
Zako Buzz:And I'm Zako Buzz. Today, we're diving into a crucial topic for international MBA aspirants, language test requirements for business school applications.
Lexa Wiz:You know, Zako, I often hear applicants stressing about GMAT scores, but they sometimes overlook the importance of language tests like TOEFL and IELTS.
Zako Buzz:That's right, Lexa. And what's interesting is that different schools have completely different approaches to these requirements.
Lexa Wiz:Exactly. Some top schools like Yale, MIT Sloan, and Columbia don't even require these tests anymore. They've found other ways to assess English proficiency, like incorporating video questions into their applications.
Zako Buzz:While on the flip side, prestigious institutions like Wharton, Kellogg, and UC Berkeley's Haas still maintain strict language test requirements for international applicants.
Lexa Wiz:Here's something crucial that our listeners need to know. Unlike GMAT scores that are valid for 5 years, TOEFL and IELTS scores are only valid for 2 years.
Zako Buzz:That's a critical point, Lexa, and this brings us to our most important advice. Take these language tests in the year you're actually applying to business schools.
Lexa Wiz:Absolutely. The strategy we recommend is to take your GMAT or GRE during your final year of college, gain some work experience, and then tackle the language tests when you're ready to apply.
Zako Buzz:And don't let language test requirements influence your school selection. The effort required for these tests is minimal compared to the opportunities they can unlock.
Lexa Wiz:You know what's fascinating, Zako? Some schools offer waivers based on professional experience in English speaking environments or previous English medium education.
Zako Buzz:That's true. But here's my advice. If even one school on your list requires these tests, just take them. It's better to have the scores and not need them than to miss out on opportunities.
Lexa Wiz:Well said. And remember to plan ahead since these tests aren't offered daily like the GMAT.
Zako Buzz:Exactly. The key takeaway for our listeners is don't let these tests be a barrier. They're just one step in your MBA journey, and proper planning makes them totally manageable.
